2009 Major Grant Recipients & Their Programs

$366,205 Awarded – The largest grant award in our affiliate’s 15 year history 

Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center- Shreveport –  Feist –Weiller Cancer Center – Partners in Wellness

10TH YEAR Funded 

  • Provides a free health-screening program for the underserved in northwest Louisiana and sponsors educational materials and programs in coordination with other community based providers. Screening mammograms are performed 5 days a week for women and men of northern Louisiana who do not have health insurance. Saint Catherine of Siena Community Center – Breast Health Education and Resource Program

5th YEAR Funded 

  • Provides educational programs and free screening for the underserved in many of the parishes in northwest Louisiana.  Also provides Spanish language interpretation at clinic appointments. For more information on how to schedule a mammogram, please call Marilu or Lakeisha at 318-865-4603. 

Northwestern State University of Louisiana - Take Action Against Breast Cancer Project

3rd YEAR Funded  

·        Provides women without insurance or other financial support in Natchitoches and Red River Parishes area no-cost mammograms. Also provides education and advocacy within the community regarding breast cancer. For more information on how to schedule a mammogram, please call Catherine at 318-357-5129. 

Desoto Regional Health System – Breast Health Outreach Initiative

2nd YEAR Funded 

·        Provides education, advocacy, and free breast screening services to medically underserved women in DeSoto and Sabine parish and other communities in Northwest Louisiana. For more information on how to schedule a mammogram, please call Verna at 318- 872- 4610.

Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center- Shreveport, Feist- Weiller Cancer Center – Patient Navigation Program

1st YEAR Funded  

  • Program will guide patients with a suspicious mammographic finding through the complex cancer care process to ensure timely diagnosis and treatment. The goal of this program is to reduce the number of patients being seen for late-stage breast cancer.

Smaller grants were awarded to: 

Community Renewal International Neighborhood Ambassadors Program focusing on the neighborhoods of Allendale, Cedar Grove, Highland, and Queensborough in Shreveport and Barksdale Annex in Bossier City. Life-long residents of these neighborhoods will be Ambassadors to the community and educate women regarding breast health and help them in obtaining free screening in partnering with our other grantees. The Pool of SiloamLadies Day at the Pool provides an educational event focused on breast health and instruction of breast self exam of medically uninsured and low income adults in the Shreveport Bossier area. For more information call 318- 631-2122.  

Bossier Parish School Nurses – Provides educational materials and breast self exam training to high school students in Bossier Parish.  

Travel grants provide to the Take Action Against Breast Cancer Program and Breast Health Outreach Initiative.

 
 

AFFILIATE OPPORTUNITIES
Affiliate Funding Opportunities

Affiliates of Susan G. Komen for the Cure fund a variety of community-based breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment projects for the medically underserved. Up to 75% of an Affiliate’s net income stays in the community in which it was raised.

The Shreveport Bossier Affiliate works with local medical experts and community leaders to conduct a comprehensive community needs assessment annually. On the local level, the Shreveport Bossier Affiliate funds non-duplicative, community-based breast health education and breast cancer screening, treatment and support programs for the medically underserved in northwest Louisiana.

Our grant cycle runs from April 1st through March 31st of each year.
Applications will become available October 1, 2009 for the 2010 through 2011 funding cycle. Please contact our office at (318) 220-7050 for more information or to obtain an application.
